What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants, which permanently replace the roots of missing teeth, are used to anchor custom-made porcelain crowns, porcelain dental bridges, and dentures securely in the mouth. Implants are comprised of three parts: a titanium post that integrates firmly into the jawbone, a metal ball that rests on the gums, and a rubber O-ring that cushions the artificial tooth.  Made of a bone-friendly material that fuses naturally to the jaw, the titanium post serves as a secure foundation for the metal ball, to which the crown, bridge, or denture will be attached. Placement of Dental Implants

At our Charlotte, North Carolina practice, our implant dentist team places dental implants, so our patients do not have to visit other specialists for implant surgery.  We provide both traditional and same-day placement. 

Traditional Implant Placement

Traditional implant placement is usually performed during two visits to our practice.  In the first visit, the implant dentist begins by administering a local anesthetic.  Next, he gently inserts the implant into the jawbone.  The gums and mouth tissue are then allowed to heal for several months in order to let the implant bond to the jawbone before the artificial tooth is attached.  Once the gums and jawbone have healed, the patient returns to our practice for a second visit, during which the dentist affixes the crown, denture, or bridge to the implant to complete the restoration.  Once in place, the restoration looks and feels completely natural and can last a lifetime.

Same-Day Teeth

For patients with adequate bone structure and healthy gums, we can often perform immediate implant placement, or “same-day teeth”, at our office in Charlotte, North Carolina.   This allows our implant dentist to place dental implants and attach artificial teeth in just one visit, eliminating the healing period required after traditional placement.  You can walk out of our practice with a completely restored smile!
